Preparing Your Home for Holiday Guests: A DFW Guide
The rooms your guests actually judge
Before you scrub every square foot of the house, be honest about where company actually looks. Guests in Plano and Allen walk through your entry, use your guest bathroom, spend time in the kitchen, and sleep in the guest room. Those four spaces carry almost all of the impression. Start there.
Entry and front hallway
People form an opinion the second they step inside. Scuff marks on the baseboards, a dusty console table, a smudged front door handle. All of it registers fast. Wipe the door, the handle, and the light switch. Clean the floor, especially if you have dogs tracking in from the backyard. In late November the oak pollen is mostly done, but ragweed season can leave a film of dust on any flat surface near the door. Get all of it.
Guest bathroom
Hard water is a real problem across DFW. If you have frameless shower glass or chrome fixtures, that mineral buildup shows up under holiday lighting in a way that a quick wipe will not fix. Use a proper calcium and lime remover on the glass, shine the faucet, scrub the grout, replace the hand towels, and put out fresh soap. Guests notice a clean bathroom more than almost anything else in the house.
Kitchen
During the holidays the kitchen takes a beating. For Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking, a clean starting point matters both for hygiene and for your own sanity. Wipe down the cabinet fronts, degrease the stovetop, clean the microwave inside, and clear the counters of clutter. If your oven has not been cleaned in months, that is worth handling before you roast anything. Inside-the-oven cleaning is an add-on we offer with any service, and it is one of the most requested ones this time of year.
Guest bedroom
Strip the bed, wash everything, and put on fresh linens the day before guests arrive. Dust the ceiling fan blades, especially if the AC has been running since May. In North Texas the AC runs hard from spring through early fall, and the return vents and fan blades collect a surprising amount of dust. Vacuum under the bed and inside the closet. Make the room feel like a real guest room, not a storage space that someone cleared out.
A week-of timeline that actually works
- Seven days out: Book any professional cleaning you need. Do not wait until the week is gone.
- Five days out: Declutter every room guests will see. Donation boxes, storage bins, whatever it takes. Cleaning around clutter is not real cleaning.
- Three days out: Your professional deep clean happens here. Every surface reset, bathrooms done properly, kitchen degreased, floors cleaned.
- Two days out: Launder guest linens and towels. Restock the guest bathroom with soap, toilet paper, and fresh towels.
- Day before: Make the guest bed. Wipe the entry door and handles. Take out all trash. A quick vacuum of high-traffic areas.
- Morning of: Spot-check the guest bath and kitchen. Light a candle if you like. You are done.
What to book professionally versus handle yourself
You can absolutely handle the decluttering, the laundry, and the surface wipe-downs yourself. What professionals do better is the deep reset: grout, mineral buildup on glass, baseboards, inside appliances, and all the corners that get skipped during a quick clean. If your home has not had a thorough clean in several months, or if you just moved into one of the newer builds in Allen or Frisco where builder dust settles into every surface, a professional deep clean is the right call before the holidays.
We always recommend a deep clean for first-time clients. It sets a proper baseline. After that, a standard clean maintains it.
How to hold the standard through the whole season
One big clean before Thanksgiving is smart. But the stretch from late November through New Year is long. You have people in and out, more cooking, more foot traffic, more mess. Booking a biweekly standard clean means your home resets every two weeks without you spending a Saturday on it. Many of our clients in Plano, Allen, McKinney, and Frisco move to biweekly through the holidays specifically for this reason. It is a lot easier to enjoy the season when you are not staring down a full house clean between visits.
Our cleaners bring their own supplies, follow a written checklist on every visit, and do a walkthrough at the start and end of each clean. You do not need to be home. Most clients leave a garage code or lockbox number and come back to a clean house.
If anything is missed, we re-clean within seven days. No argument, no charge.
