Moving Into New Home Cleaning Checklist for DFW Buyers

What the Sellers' Final Clean Almost Never Covers

You closed on your new home in Frisco, Forney or McKinney. Congratulations. The listing said the house was "professionally cleaned," and maybe it was. But a sellers' clean is done to get the home off the inspection list, not to get it ready for your family to live in. There is a real difference, and you will feel it the moment you open a kitchen drawer or check the inside of the oven.

Here is what that final clean almost always skips:

  • Inside kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanity drawers, including shelf liner residue and crumbs in the corners
  • Inside the oven, the fridge, and the dishwasher filter
  • The interior of windows, especially in new construction in Frisco and Forney where builder dust settles on every surface
  • Baseboards, door frames and light switch plates
  • Bathroom grout and the area behind and around toilets
  • Return air vents and ceiling fan blades, which in DFW collect a full season of dust from the AC running May through October
  • Garage door tracks and laundry room corners

In new construction, add builder dust to every surface you can think of. In resale homes, especially the 1980s and 1990s ranches common in McKinney, expect textured walls that trap dust and original tile grout that has never been deep-cleaned.

Why the Home Needs to Be Empty, with Power and Water On

Clean before the movers arrive, not after. Once furniture is in, you lose access to baseboards, closet floors, cabinet interiors and window tracks. You will be cleaning around boxes for weeks.

Power needs to be on so cleaners can see inside cabinets, run the dishwasher on a sanitize cycle if needed, and check that the oven is actually clean once the interior light is working. Water needs to be on for obvious reasons. If you are buying new construction, confirm with your builder that both are active before your cleaning appointment.

The Right Order to Work Through the Home

Order matters. Dust and debris fall downward, so you always clean top to bottom and save floors for last. Within each room, work cabinets and storage first so anything that falls onto the floor gets picked up in the final sweep and mop.

Step 1: Cabinets, Drawers and Closets

Wipe every interior shelf and drawer. Remove any old shelf liner. Check the back corners where crumbs, hardware scraps from the builder or old contact paper likes to hide. Do this in the kitchen, every bathroom vanity and all bedroom closets.

Step 2: Appliances

Inside the oven, inside the fridge and the freezer, and the dishwasher interior. The fridge and oven are add-ons we do at every move-in clean we handle. Do not skip them. A fridge that smells like the previous owner's leftovers will bother you every time you open it.

Step 3: Bathrooms

Scrub the tub, shower walls and grout. In DFW, hard water spots on frameless shower glass and chrome fixtures are almost guaranteed, even in a brand-new home in Forney or McKinney that has been sitting for a few weeks with the water tested. Use an appropriate hard water remover. Clean around and behind the toilet, not just the bowl. Wipe cabinet faces and mirrors.

Step 4: Walls, Baseboards and Windows

Walls are an add-on but worth it in a move-in situation, especially with builder-white walls in new construction that show every scuff from the showing process. Inside windows are another add-on that makes a real difference when you are starting fresh. Wipe every baseboard, door frame and light switch plate.

Step 5: Bedrooms and Common Areas

Dust ceiling fans, vents and blinds. Wipe window sills. This is also when you handle the laundry room if you want it done as an add-on.

Step 6: Floors Last

Vacuum every room including closets, then mop hard floors. Doing floors last means everything that fell during the earlier steps gets picked up in one pass.

What to Do the Day Before the Movers Arrive

If you are having professionals handle the cleaning, book them for the day before moving day, not moving day itself. That gives you time to walk through after the clean, before the chaos starts. Bring a flashlight and check inside cabinets, under sinks and the oven interior yourself. If anything was missed, a good cleaning company will come back and fix it.

At Marble Maids we offer a seven-day re-clean guarantee. If something was missed, we come back. We also do a walkthrough at the start and end of every job so you know exactly what was done.

For a move-in clean, we almost always recommend starting with a deep clean rather than a standard clean. The condition of a home after a sale, even a well-maintained one, calls for it. From there, you can switch to a recurring standard clean on whatever schedule fits your household, weekly, biweekly or monthly.
